Bowen Therapy Restores Balance!

Alternative health is gaining popularity all around the world, and rightly so! I know I always choose the natural alternative at any cost so as to avoid nasty drug side-effects for me and my family. Anyway, I thought I could write a little bit about Bowen Therapy, and explain to you all just how amazing this technique is without writing a massive essay! So I want to try and keep this as simple as possible, and I have tried to cull as much as the information as I can in order for you to capture exactly what Bowen Therapy is and how it easily restores balance to unbalanced bodies.

There’s a common misconception that Bowen is “just a massage”. So here’s the scope on Bowen Therapy and just how amazing it is!

What is Bowen Therapy?

The Bowen Therapy Technique is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia over 50 years ago.

Gentle moves are performed to stimulate the body to heal itself. As we all know, the body has its own innate healing mechanisms and Bowen ‘wakes’ it up. The moves are done at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves) and deliver ‘signals’ to the nervous system, and the body then responds. In other words, Bowen is the catalyst, and your body does all the fixing and gets things working in proper order again!

Bowen Therapy is so gentle and safe it can be used on newborns, and right through to the elderly!

What can Bowen Therapy do for you?

Pain is the number one reason clients seek out Bowen Therapy! All sorts of issues and injuries can be helped by Bowen. They are generally acute, or chronic. Acute issues are more like a headache from neck tension, or back pain from too much gardening. Then you have the chronic problems such as constant fatigue, arthritis, or even tennis elbow from too much sport, or heaven forbid, from work.

In this day and age of computers we are seeing more and more instances of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome and many other common issues from being seated for long periods of time such as Sciatica. These are a few of the obvious reasons to have a Bowen Therapy but there are a lot of other ‘unseen’ problems helped as well. Conditions such as chronic fatigue, menstrual disorders and PMS, asthma, ADD, infant colic, and constipation all come under the scope of Bowen Therapy.

Bowen will pretty much help every ache and pain you have happening by bringing your body back into balance, with the added benefit of balancing your emotions too.

Bowen works in miraculous ways!
A few years back I had a female client with a compressed nerve in her upper spine causing numbness in her fingers. So I treated her for this successfully but a few months later she found out she was pregnant. The reason this is unusual is she was infertile due to blocked fallopian tubes. This is how miraculous Bowen Therapy is as it works on the whole person not just the immediate problem. It cleared her tubes and at 43 years of age she got the baby she always wanted! So I can add ‘getting women pregnant’ to the long list of conditions helped by Bowen!

What can you expect from a Bowen Therapy treatment?

A typical Bowen session generally lasts about 45 minutes. So you get to chill out and relax while soft music plays in the background as you have your body gently worked on. It’s not uncommon to fall asleep during your session as the Bowen calms your nervous system right down to you’re in a state of deep relaxation…it’s a bit like meditation I guess.

A ‘session’ involves one or more ‘procedures’, each of which consists of several sets of ‘moves’. Between each set of moves there is a short pause for the body to begin responding. On your first visit the entire body is ‘balanced’ by addressing the lower back, the upper back, and then the neck. The ideal time for a Bowen session is immediately after an injury or when a problem arises. That way, your body can overcome the trauma before it begins to compensate for it.

When I decided to practice Bowen Therapy I knew that it would be a great tool that I could use to help people not only remove pain, but also help to get their bodies back into balance. The results I am getting never cease to amaze me – but at the same time I totally expect it, knowing now just how amazing Bowen Therapy is!

Bowen Therapy Explained

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a dynamic and gentle technique that works with the muscles and connective tissue to activate healing in the body, and give substantial relief from specific injuries and a range of other health issues.

Bowen Therapy is the catalyst, and your body does all the fixing and gets things working in proper order again.

All sorts of injuries can be helped by Bowen Therapy, as well as acute issues and chronic problems. Gentle moves are performed to stimulate the body to heal itself. The body has its own innate healing mechanisms and Bowen revives it.

The moves are done at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves) and deliver ‘signals’ to the nervous system, and the body then responds. The Bowen Therapy is so gentle that it can be used to treat everyone – from babies through to the elderly.

To get the best results from your Bowen Therapy session:

Don’t have any other forms of bodywork for four days before and after.                                                                                                                                                        Drink 2-3 litres of water (1litre per 22kg of body weight).
Avoid heavy exercise on the day of your session.
Don’t use ice or heat on the site of injury.
Wear light-weight, loose-fitting clothing that can be worked through.

How many Bowen Therapy treatments will be needed?

This varies from person to person. With children and acute injuries 1-2 sessions are all that is generally needed. In chronic cases there is the initial 2-4 sessions followed by monthly Bowen Balances. These monthly sessions will eventually get longer in between as the body rebalances to a more relaxed state of well-being.

Can Bowen Therapy be undertaken with conventional therapies?

Bowen is a ‘complementary’ modality in the sense that it enhances and complements, but does not interfere with, traditional medical treatment. In contrast to other hands-on modalities, where the practitioner imposes correction on the client through manipulation, Bowen facilitates the body in healing itself, with minimal intervention. Because of the subtle nature of Bowen Therapy, and the body’s continuing response to it over several days afterwards. As i said previously, other forms of manipulative therapy are discouraged for up to five days after a session, as they may interfere with the efficacy of the work.

The History of Bowen Therapy is an interesting study…

History of Bowen Therapy starts with its founder, Mr. Tom Bowen, who developed the Bowen Technique in Geelong, Victoria.  After serving in World War II, Mr. Bowen became interested in ways of alleviating human suffering.  He noticed that when he made certain moves on a body, it had particular effects which initiated healing of many complaints.  Mr. Bowen developed the technique without training in any health care field: he claimed that the work was simply a gift from God.  He developed the system as it is today and eventually opened his clinic full time.  The 1975 Victorian Government inquiry into alternative health care professionals cited Mr. Bowen as seeing some 13,000 patients per year (as assessed over a 27 week period).

Tom Bowen in clinic

In 1974 Mr. Bowen invited Mr. Oswald Rentsch and his wife Elaine to study with him for the next two and a half years.  Mr. Bowen had no notes, charts or manuals but under the guidance of Mr. Bowen, the Rentschs observed and documented his technique.  This was subsequently verified by Mr. Bowen and his assistant, Mrs Rene Horwood, as a true representation of the original technique.

But the History of Bowen Therapy doesn’t stop there!

By agreement the Rentschs did not start to teach the technique until after Mr. Bowen died.  The first Rentsch seminar was in Perth, Western Australia.  Four years later the Rentschs were teaching full time in Australia, New Zealand, North America, the United Kingdom and Europe.  Dedicated to preserving the technique and ensuring it was taught in its original form, the Rentschs founded the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia in 1987 naming the technique BOWTECH – The Bowen Technique.

Bowen Therapy Becomes Nationally Recognised

In 2005 the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia teamed with the Border College of Natural Therapies to produce the first government accredited Bowen certifications – a Certificate IV in Bowen Therapy and a Diploma in Bowen Therapy.  The Certificate IV in Bowen Therapy is now the minimum requirement to be a full member of the Bowen Association of Australia.  Members are required to undergo regular continuing education and refresher courses and maintain a current first aid certificate.

The History of Bowen Therapy has now progressed to the point where it is recognised as a valid and powerful natural healing tool.
